Choose what strategy you would like try and make notes for the future:
- Reflect on your own needs, vulnerabilities, and sources of stress. Consider the specific challenges you face in your work—whether physical, digital, or psychological—and how personal circumstances may be affecting your overall well-being.
- Establish and maintain clear boundaries between your professional and personal life to prevent burnout and sustain long-term balance.
- Incorporate physical, emotional, and mental self-care into your daily routine. This may include rest, exercise, mindfulness, creative outlets, or regular check-ins with yourself.
- Recognize when you need help and reach out to trusted friends, colleagues, family members, or mental health professionals. Prioritize connection over isolation, especially during periods of stress or crisis.
- Take proactive steps to protect your digital presence—secure your accounts, use encrypted communication tools, and educate yourself about online safety to reduce the risk of threats and harassment.
- Implement safety measures to mitigate physical risks associated with your work. This might include safety protocols, situational awareness training, or having emergency plans in place.
- Join peer support networks and engage in community care initiatives with other freedom of expression defenders. Share experiences, resources, and solidarity. Offer and seek mutual aid.
- Use your voice to normalize discussions around care, support, and safety. Advocate within your organization or network for policies that prioritize the well-being of defenders.
- Make time for regular self-reflection. Evaluate your well-being, effectiveness, and the adequacy of your care strategies. Be open to adjusting your approach based on what you’ve learned through experience and feedback.
